  3. Dialogue Practice

  T: Look at Exercise Two. Listen to the tape and repeat after it.

  Now let the students use the patterns to practise more.

  At last, try to ask them to make some new sentences. For example:

  1.A: How dry it is today!

   B: Yes, but it’ll be wetter later on.

  2.A: What a dry day!

   B: Yes, and it’ll get drier, I’m afraid.

I. Organizing the class

  Teacher: What will you tell us today, student A?

  Student A: Today Ill tell you a funny story. Please listen to me carefully. I’ll ask you some questions after the story.

  T: OK.

  I. Revision

  T: Whats the date today?

  Ss: Its December 15th.

  T: What s the weather like?

  Ss: It’s very cold, but quite sunny.

  T: How cold it is today!

  Ss: Yes, but it’ll be warmer later on.

  T: What a cold day!

  Ss: Yes, and itll get colder, we re afraid.

IIII. Leading in

  T: Lets watch the video, its about how to make a phone. Then youll watch several conversations by telephone. You II learn how the foreigners telephone the others in English.

  T: All right. When you call somebody and introduce yourself, you should say “This is or This is sb. speaking.” When you want to know who picks up the phone, you should ask “Who s that?”

IV. Presentation

  T: Now listen to the tape and try to understand it.

Language Points

  I. ring up, get into communication with sb by telephone.

eg. I’ll ring you up this evening.

  ring up = call up(us)

  2. hike [haik] V. go for a long walk in the country, taken for pleasure or exercise.

eg. They are going to hike tomorrow.

  T:0pen your books and read the dialogue.

  T: Answer the following questions according to the dialogue

  1. What s the relationship between Bruce and the person whom she is speaking to?

  2. Where is Bruce now and where is Dad?

  3. What s the weather like in Xinjiang and in Sydney?

  4. How about Bruce s health, and what about his father?

  5. What kinds of fruit does Bruce like very much?

  6. What are his parents going to do?

  7. Are they very happy to talk by telephone? How do you know?

Keys:

  1. They are son and father.

  2. Bruce is in Xinjiang, China, his father is in Sydney, Australia.

  3.1ts cold in the morning, but turns very warm at noon in Xinjiang. It’s warm and sunny in Sydney.
