Are you left-handed or right-handed?For years, many scientists have thought that the idea of using one hand to perform most tasks, such as writing or eating or catching a ball, was distinctly a

Now researchers are finding that some primates, a group of animals that includes monkeys,

chimps, and gorillas, may favor one hand over the other. In the experiments with 18 squirrel monkeys, U.S. psychologists Dr. James King and Virginia Landau found that the monkeys

preferred to use their left hands when trying to catch goldfish in a pool.
In another experiment by Dr. Jeannette Ward of Memphis State University, lemurs consistently used one hand to retrieve food tossed into water.

In 515 out of 516 cases, says Dr. Ward, the lemurs use their left hands.

www.deyou8.com 首先教师让学生们运用Skimming了解文章的大致内容,明确此文为一篇科普性小论文。通过文章标题以及各段落的首、尾大致了解此文是讲述两位大学博士在对多种动物进行研究后发现:许多动物习惯用左手。
之后进行详细阅读理解:(1)是个连词,它有助于学生们了解两个句子之间的逻辑关系,以下所罗列的一些行为均为上面所指的用单手所完成的大多数任务。(2)这个词学生们并不认识,然而它在was后面,如去除也不会影响本句的完整性,又根据Understanding Word Formation学生们知道,词的后缀是改变词的词性的,从“-ly”后缀可以猜想它是一个副词,于是判断它是一个无关紧要的,起修饰作用的词,让学生们暂且不去看它。(3)这个词学生们也不认识,但根据下文,判断后一句是primates的同位语,于是可以根据后一句知道primates是一种动物的总称。(4)学生们学过名词psychology是“心理学”之意,根据词缀的知识知道后缀“-ist”是指人,指“什么学家”,于是再根据上下文理解,知道James King 和Virginia Landau 是心理学家。(5)这句句子可以指导学生们根据已学过的分词语法知识来理解,tossed是过去分词作定语修饰之前的food,它与之前的food之间是被动关系,意为“被掷到水中的食物”,所以此句译为:“狐猴始终使用一只手取回投掷到水中的食物”,当然“狐猴”一词还是查字典所得的,因为它是个动物术语,专门指一种动物,学生们一时之间无法知晓其意,然而又很好奇它的词义,于是只能借助字典。

    语法的学习除了教师的精讲之外,离不开学生的实际语言练习与运用。创设不同的活动让学生积极参与,使语法学习不再被动接受、死记硬背。
第一层次:句型操练
同桌二人或前排与后排A、B二人进行。
A 准备两句简单句—→ B把这两句简单句合并成一句同位语从句 —→ B准备两句简单句 —→ A把这两句简单句合并成一句同位语从句
例:A: We are delighted at the news. Beijing will host the 2008 Olympic Games.
B: We are delighted at the news that Beijing will host the 2008 Olympic Games.
  I had no idea. Would he help me with my English?
A: I had no idea whether he would help me with my English.
  The question still worries me. Who destroyed the car?
   B: The question who destroyed the car still worries me.

第二层次:名词与同位语从句配对
教师准备一些小卡片,一张卡片上是含有抽象名词的主句,另一张卡片上是同位语从句,让同学配对并且组成复合句进行练习。
例:
1. Many people hold the belief…
2. The president paid little attention to the suggestion….
3. There is the possibility…
4. We have noticed the fact…

A. Computer users should be careful of hackers.
B. English is becoming less formal.
C. People often “e-mail” messages instead of writing postcards or letters.
D. Yuppies may be ripped off when they take their Porsche to the garage for a service.
Match: 1-that-B   2-that-A  3-that-D  4-that-C

第三层次:情景对话
教师创设情景: Mary failed to attend Professor Smith’s lecture on English learning. Her friend Jack told him the advice Professor Smith made in the lecture. 学生们分Mary和Jack角色进行对话,操练同位语从句转达Professor Smith的建议。
例:
Mary :  Hi, Jack.
Jack :   Hi, Mary.
Mary :  I was ill yesterday, so I didn’t go to attend Professor Smith’s lecture on English learning. What did he say?
Jack :  He made a suggestion that….He thought it was a good idea that…

说明:
针对 “学习方法” 这一话题,可在学生中开展讨论:学习有没有万灵药?学习有没有捷径?这个话题值得学生们思考与讨论,教师要引导学生端正学习态度, 让学生通过讨论认识到学习没有万灵药, 只有适合自己的方法才是最好的方法, 学习没有捷径, 只有努力才能换来学习的成功。
1. Discussion on the following issues
  1) Do you believe the advertisements such as “A 24-Hour Program of Success in Spoken English”, “Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks or your money back?”
2) Are there shortcuts in learning? Is there a cure-all for all the students?
