　　1. as well，as well as，not only…but also
　　
　　as well是副词短语，意为“也，还”，一般放在句末，不可用于否定句。并列连词and，but可与as well搭配。as well as是并列连词，意为“既……又……”，“不仅……而且……”。A as well as B的意思是“不仅B而且A”，其强调重点在A。当as well as连接两个并列的主语时，谓语动词应与as well as前面的主语保持一致。not only…but also…也是并列连词，意为“不仅……而且……”，所强调的重点在后者。not only A but also B，可按词序翻译为“不仅A而且B”。not only…but also…连接两个并列主语并被置于谓语动词之前时，谓语动词应和后面的主语保持人称和数的一致。用not only…but also…连接两个并列的分句并且将not only置于句首时，前句主?谓语的位置要倒装。如：
　　
I can see how English is used in everyday life as well.
　　我还可以看到在日常生活中是怎样使用英语的。
　　He is a worker and artist as well. 他是一位工人，又是一位画家。
　　The girl is lively as well as healthy. 这女孩既健康又活泼。

　　2. watch out，look out，take care，be careful
　　
　　这些短语意思相近，用法相似。 意思是“注意，提防，小心，当心”。都可以单独使用，以提醒对方注意。watch out和look out后跟注意的对象时须加介词for。take care和becareful都可接不定式的否定式或从句。如：
　　
Watch out/Look out!A car is coming at you.
　　小心!一辆车向你冲来了。
　　Take care/Be careful!The pan’s hot. 当心!锅很烫。
　　Watch out for the dog. It may strike at you.
　　小心那条狗，它可能咬你。
　　Look out for your eyes when you do your homework.
　　你做作业时，要注意眼睛。
　　Do be careful/Take care not to break the jar.
　　千万当心不要打破这个罐子。
　　Take care that you should finish the job ahead of time.
　　注意你们都应该提前完成这项工作。
　　Be careful how you start the machine.

　3. holiday，vacation，leave，off
　　
　　均可指“假期”，holiday多用于英国英语，vacation多用于美国英语，但英国大学多用vacation，中小学则用 holiday。另外，holiday还指“假日，节日”。leave一般指政府机关的公务员?军人等的假期，也可指病假。off一般指休假，不工作。如：
　　
I wish you a pleasant holiday. 祝你假期愉快。
　　Where are you going for your holidayMoon/vacation?
　　你们打算去哪里度假?
　　We take a month’s holiday every year. 我们每年休假一个月。
　　Tom is on holiday/vacation. 汤姆正在度假。
　　Christmas is a holiday for everyone. 圣诞节是所有人的节日。
　　Tomorrow will be a holiday. 明天放假。
　　Mike asked for a sick leave of three days. 迈克请了三天病假。
　　I’ll take a day off tomorrow. 明天我休假一天。

　　4. separate，divide
　　
　　动词separate与divide都可表示“分开”的意思。separate侧重把原来连在一起或靠近的人或物分开，使之隔一段距离。 separate与from连用时，意为“把……和……分隔开来”。 separate还可作“分手，离开”讲。divide侧重于把一个整体分成若干部分，其后常有介词into，among，between等与之搭配。如：
　　The two islands are separated by the Irish Sea.
　　爱尔兰海把这两个海岛分隔开来。
　　He went over and separated the two boys who were fighting.
　　他走过去把两个正在打架的男孩分开了。
　　The Suez Canal separates Africa from Asia.
　　苏伊士运河把非洲和亚洲分隔开了。
　　They chatted together till midnight and then separated.
　　他们闲谈到半夜，然后就分手了。
　　You can divide this between (among) you.
　　这个你们两人(几个人)可以分着使用。
　　A year is divided into four seasons. 一年分为四季。

　　5. protect，prevent
　　
　　protect意为“保护；防护”，强调其宾语不受到伤害或损害，常与介词from或against连用。prevent意为“防止；预防；制止；妨碍”，既可指事先采取措施不让某事发生，也表示尽量将已经发生或即将发生的事停止，其后可接名词，代词或动名词，还可用prevent…from doing sth.结构，表示“阻止……干某事”。如：
　　We should protect frogs. 我们必须保护青蛙。
　　He put on the sunglasses to protect his eyes from the strong sunlight.
　　
　　他戴上太阳镜以保护眼睛免受日光的强烈照射。
　　It is their duty to protect their friends against the enemy.
　　保护朋友不受敌人的伤害是他们的职责。
　　One way to prevent fire at home is to tell children to stay away from fire.
　　家庭防火的方法之一就是让孩子不要靠近火。
　　Nothing will prevent my marrying her. 没有什么会妨碍我娶她。
　　The rain prevented us from playing tennis.

　　6. normal，common，usual
　　
　　normal正常的；正规的，强调正常状态下预期的或合乎发展规律的。common普通的；常见的；共同的，强调共性。usual通常的；平常的，侧重于习惯。如：
　　His temperature is normal. 他的体温正常。
　　Mr. Green teaches in a normal school.
　　格林先生在一所师范学校教书。
　　These birds are very common here. 这些鸟在这一带很常见。
　　Snow is common in cold countries.
　　在寒冷的国家，下雪是常见的事情。
　　He did it in a usual way. 他用通常的方法做的这件事。
　　I got up earlier than usual. 我比平时起得早。
